on the back of before

on the back of before showcases four contemporary choreographers and the early works of postmodern icon trisha brown. this single concert bridges a wide set of practices and approaches to dance keen on investigating live and mediated bodies. in abdiel figueroa reyes' somewhere something shifted, cinematic tropes, concert dance, and modern acting capture together the tensions between an individual's desires and the complex structures of what makes a family and a home. for phillip "phree" wood's essence, collaboratively devised movement influenced by hip hop and contemporary styles allow the dancers to explore the relationships that push and pull them into and out of group-forms. kinnari vora’s sutra: the interwoven furthers this investigation into the interconnectedness of bodies in relation—their continuity and impermanence—through storytelling derived from bharatanatyam and contemporary indian forms. holding space in common—whether for celebration or for mourning—also grounds erin kilmurray's work these haunting times, in which the ephemeral act of dancing leaves something behind.
