Dunham Technique with Ysaye McKeever

Dunham Technique is a vibrant African American dance form that engages the body, mind, and spirit! Created by dance pioneer Katherine Dunham, the technique is informed by the traditional dances of the African Diaspora, as well as by modern and ballet. Dunham Technique creates strong, dynamic dancers who embody rhythm and grace. Classes will offer a variety of experiences, including breathing, isolations, barre work, and progressions.

In this open level class, dancers will learn the foundational movements of the Dunham Technique and be introduced to Dunham Technique’s Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian influences.

Hip-Hop Meets Dancehall with Leyda “Lady Sol” Garcia

Hip-Hop Meets Dancehall (HMD) is an open-level community dance workshop developed by Leyda "Lady Sol" Garcia, a self-proclaimed Professor of Practice who grew up in Chicago's street dance community at the intersection of House, Hip-Hop & Dancehall club culture. HMD explores the Jamaican sound system and its influence on Hip-Hop's foundation, (namely music, dance, and community). Participants will be introduced to Jamaican social dances of the 90's and 2000's which developed in direct connection to its popular music genre, Dancehall.

In this class, you'll learn steps that include a fusion of styles and techniques!

Matt Pumanes is the artistic director of Chicago’s “Piecemakers” and “The Puzzle League”. Since 2010, Matt has led The Puzzle League to numerous dance championships including World of Dance, Prelude, and Chapkis' Collaboration. He has earned many scholarships from Debbie Reynolds, Millennium Dance Complex, Urban Jamm, and Monsters of Hip Hop. Some credits include The Luvabulls, ABC7 New Years, and Jennifer Hudson. Currently, Matt teaches weekly classes at The Puzzle Box Dance Studio and travels across the US to share his craft!

Under A Groove: House Dance Aesthetics with Kelsa "K-Soul" Robinson

Participants will practice the techniques and underlying grooves associated with House dance, which grew out of the Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ House music subculture in Chicago and New York in the early 1980s and is now practiced widely across the globe.  We will explore hallmarks of House movement including jacking, skating, footwork patterns, polyrhythm, the counter-pull of contrasting energies and directions in the body while leaning into the spiritual and philosophical values held within house spaces including freedom, inclusion, community, upliftment, and love.

Cuban Modern Dance, a mix of forms of traditional American modern dance with Afro-Cuban dances and Flamenco dance from Spain developed by Ramiro Guerra, the Father of Modern Dance in Cuba, represents the cultural mosaic of Cuban culture. The technique focuses on the work of the torso with contractions and undulations while keeping fluidity in the arms.

Yaminah Legohn 

DanceHall Workshop Series with Yaminah Legohn

Dancehall is a unique and expressive style created within Jamaican culture. Derived from Reggae music, this style has its own culture and dances that have been created by individuals and dance crews from Jamaica and around the world. This specific style became known in the mid to late 80s and has become popular ever since. 

In this class, students learn the history of Dancehall culture as they execute classic steps to corresponding riddims, choreographies, and freestyle techniques. Each class includes a warm-up covering old, middle, and new school dances that are danced at dancehall/ reggae parties across the globe. For the second half of the class, students incorporate these dances into choreographies and freestyles set to the hottest Dancehall tunes. Through learning these energetic and fun dances, students will develop confident and bold self-expression- the foundational element of Dancehall culture.
