This beginning-intermediate class explores the spine through Dunham and Release Techniques, drawing on the foundational work of Katherine Dunham, an American modern dance pioneer, anthropologist, and UChicago alum (’36). Integrating African Diasporic dance traditions–particularly from the Caribbean–with modern dance and ballet, Dunham Technique emphasizes groundedness, polyrhythm, and embodied efficiency. Through exercises, guided explorations, and movement phrases, students will investigate the spine through articulation, release, breath, and isolation, developing a dynamic and expressive relationship with the body.
