As a current PhD student in the joint program of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Theatre and Performance Studies, I work on Chinese opera in different forms from the late imperial to the modern era, especially the process of transmediation. More specifically, I am interested in topics of opera films, opera reforms, cross-dressing performance, revolutionary culture, and the Ming-Qing drama tradition. I draw upon a variety of methodological approaches from philosophy, history, film, gender, music, etc. I particularly aim to bring attention to the perspectives and insights of the opera performers. Grounded in almost fifteen years of theatrical training, I am deeply passionate about the all-female Chinese opera genre Yue opera, especially the art of the young male lead (xiaosheng) role.
