Andrei Kureichik is a Belarusian playwright, film and stage director, publicist, and civil activist. He is a member of the Coordination Council of opposition in Belarus, which was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament in 2020. 

Andrei holds an Master degree in Law and Political Science of Belarusian State University and degree in Theatre directing from Oleg Tabakov, the Artistic director of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre. 

Among his most prominent works is the documentary play Insulted: Belarus, a response to the 2020 Belarusian presidential elections and the subsequent violent crackdown by Alexander Lukashenko’s regime. This play, which has been translated into 39 languages, has seen over 200 performances worldwide. In addition to his theatre work, Andrei is a prolific screenwriter and filmmaker, with more than 30 film and television projects to his name, including the award-winning films Above the Sky (2012) and Garash (2015).        

       In the fall of 2023, City Garage Theatre of Santa Monica (CA) presented the English-language premiere of his play “Insulted. Belarus,”. The production was showered with honors, received rave reviews, and won Stage Scene LA’s award for “Best International Play.”

His academic Interests include Protest Art in the USSR and post-Soviet Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia, Soviet and post-Soviet Cinema and Theatre Hidden Masterpieces, and Cultural Decolonization of Soviet and Post-Soviet Slavic Nations. Innovative practices of Art Resistance.  

In the fall of 2022, Kureichik participated in the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program at Yale. He was a Fortunoff and Henry Hart Rice Research Scholar and Lecturer at Yale. 

Now he has joined the University of Chicago community as a Neubauer Fellow and PhD student in Slavic and Theater and Performance Studies.
